Fire crews ramp up containment efforts as Elkhorn fire consumes nearly 26,000 acres

The Elkhorn fire has burned around 25,961 acres and is 36% complete as of Saturday morning.

According to a recent news release, a weak cold front is moving through central Idaho, providing cloud coverage and winds out of the northwest. Crews expect increased fire activity over the next few days as temperatures rise and lower humidity levels in the area.

Fire crews are continuing with containment efforts in the Whitewater Wilderness Ranch area. They are also continuing work along the Salmon River corridor. Two heavy equipment task forces work to create fuel breaks on the fire's north side from 9505 Road to Magruder Road and along the 505 UTV trail into the 2020 scar from the Shissler fire.

Fire crews are building indirect lines near Mallard Creek, Cook Ranch, and the town of Dixie along road 9550A Road to 9560 Road through the Trapper's Creek area.
