Key Highlights

  • Toners are a great skin product to minimize facial pores
  • A toner with high alcohol content may not be the prefect pick for your face
  • As an alternative to toner, you can use rose water

Thanks to Instagram, our skincare routine is something very similar to our diet chart. Every two hours our skin starts to feel hungry for moisturising, hydration, and nourishment. There are plenty of products that can serve the purpose here but of late, toners have taken special space in almost everyone's skincare routine. When feeling too charged or too lazy, all one has to do is clean your face and spritz some toner. That's pretty much it!

However, as easy toners are as skin products, they do come with their own setbacks. Comes as a shocker right? Just like every other skincare product, toners also have their own pros and cons that one must keep in mind before investing and then applying them. But don't worry, to spare you from all the search, below we have rounded all that you need to know about toners.

Toners: Pros and Cons

Pros: Toners are best to minimize pores. Half of the skin issues that some of us face are because of open pores. The annoying pimples that make an appearance a day before an important event are not likely to pop out if our pores are not clogged.

Cons: Toners come with alcohol content and are likely to make your skin dry and flaky eventually. To tackle this con, best switch to homemade toners or use rose water instead.

Pros: Toners are super hydrating for the skin. The nutrients like aloe vera, lavender that you otherwise cannot consume in your diet every day can be fed to the skin from outside via toners. They have a refreshing feel and after a dull day at work, that's all that one needs.

Cons: If used in excess, toners can cause skin irritation coupled with redness and swelling. All of this, again, happens due to the alcohol content that you might want to replace.

Pros: For those who are skin enthusiasts, toners are a great deal as they provide an additional layer of protection. After cleaning your face with a mild wash, spritzing toner can do you wonders as it helps get rid of the impurities settled in the pores.

Best uses of toners

What is the ideal time and way to use toners? Simply put, there is no finite answer to this question. Instead, using toners is based on a person's skincare routine. While some follow a 10-step regime in the morning, there are those who feel sufficient with their basic CTM. It certainly depends on you, your skin combination, and when and how you want to use a toner. Ideally,

  • You should use a toner right after washing your face with a mild cleanser. Do not go harsh with your cleaning and make sure you are using toner and cleanser of the same brand or ones with similar ingredients.
  • All you have to do is spray some toner on your problem areas. If not, you can damp cotton balls or tissues with the toning liquid and apply it to your face.
  • Give your skin 5-10 minutes to absorb the toner fully and once that's done, apply moisturise and seal the skin nutrients.
