The villagers in the Animal Crossing games come in a variety of designs. Some villagers are sought, traded, and bought. Others make the player consider restarting their Switch when they appear in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
As with our picks for the best villagers in New Horizons, everything is a matter of personal opinion. One player’s hated villager may be someone’s favorite. Personalities and appearance both factor into whether a villager is loved or hated. The smug personality makes the villager haughty and rude, but players are willing to ignore that when the villager is cute. When they’re ugly, then they end up with their own hate-filled subreddit.

While it’s all subjective, there are some villagers that players love to hate. Here are our 10 worst villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and you can either agree or end up hating them even more.
Pietro is an unusual case: he is either loved or hated with no in-between. He can be one of the best villagers for some as he’s a rare villager and quite popular on the forums. On the other hand, others are happy to get rid of him. Pietro is a sheep with a clown theme, which appeals to a very select crowd.
Often praising himself as “cool” with an annoying catchphrase (“honk honk!”) to match, his obnoxious appearance matches his personality quite well. If you’re unfortunate enough to find Pietro moving into your island, seek out a new home for him on Reddit or various Animal Crossing forums.
The mice villagers tend to have cheese-themed names. Sometimes it’s cute. Chadder, while not the most popular, isn’t the worst villager to have. Limberg is terrible: a bright orange mouse with an odd green five-o-clock shadow around his mouth and blue ears. Why does he have a five-o-clock shadow that makes him look like a molded piece of cheese?
On top of his poor visual design, he has a cranky personality. Cranky villagers aren’t bad villagers. They are portrayed as older, calling the player “kid” and referencing their age. If you can move past his habit of belittling villagers, he can learn to confide in you and to consider you his only friend. However, having a mouse named after cheese with a five-o-clock shadow calling you “kid” is just weird.
Much like Limberg listed above, Barold sports a hefty five-o-clock shadow. This dark grey cub has even darker facial hair that accents the lack of hair on his head. Again, why give any of them an odd five-o-clock shadow? Why is this a necessary trait for them to have? Top it off with bright pink lips and it’s just extremely hard to see past his creepy appearance.
Aside from his repulsive appearance and lazy personality, his home interior makes him creepier. With a big computer server and walls filled with security monitors, it’s hard to give him the benefit of the doubt that he’s simply just a computer whiz. Barold is simply worrisome to have in your village, and it’s better off without him.
Gorillas are overwhelmingly disliked. Three of them appear on this list and we have smashed them all into one entry so they don’t take up too much space. That is how much we dislike them. While some of their personalities can be missed, the real problem here is visual design. The developers just really missed the mark, which is a shame because real-life gorillas look incredible. This character design just look like a mobile Animal Cross knockoff, and we can’t be having that on our island.
Clyde being a lazy personality is not the end of the world, as they can be great villagers who are laidback foodies which makes them easy to get along with. The problem with Clyde is his appearance. Horses are adorable and it’s unimaginable to think of them as repulsive creatures. However, Clyde proves this otherwise.
This yellow horse is sporting one of the worst shirts ever placed in a video game — the worst kind of pink shading clashes with green, blue, and off-white in a shirt that looks like a color test from a TV show that went bad.
Having dermatological problems is not an issue. We pride ourselves on the fact that cool sea breezes on our island are great for everyone, but Wart Jr. manages to be a cranky personality type while looking smug. That shouldn’t even be possible but just look at his smug little face. Animal Crossing New Horizons is a gentle, relaxing game, but that Wart Jr. grin really makes you wish that the Doomguy crossover memes were real.
Beardo finds a lot of hate based on his appearance. He is a light blue bear with brown, fluffy fur on his chest and stomach. The location and color of the fur on his belly have drawn some more mature comparisons from players and sent a lot of hate his way.
Being named after the Japanese name for a type of facial hair, he weirdly doesn’t sport a beard but mutton chops instead. It’s hard to deny his used car salesman appearance and that he desperately needs pants. To make it worse, this smug villager will occasionally flirt with you, so you may want to steer clear.
Croque isn’t the worst character but suffers from terrible visual design. Although it is creative that his appearance takes after a Japanese Daruma doll, this just makes him look like an odd cross between a frog and a crab who does nothing but frown.
A bright red frog with a mustache and cranky personality certainly doesn’t earn him any praise. To make matters worse, his “as if” catchphrase makes even genuine statements sound insincere and rude.
Tammi is a bright monkey villager. At first, she doesn’t seem so bad. She may sport bright yellow fur, but it’s not terrible with her grey stripes. Then she turns around and the nightmarish orange eyes contrasting violently against her yellow fur peer into your very soul.
It gets scarier when you discover that Tammi has a peppy personality. Peppy villagers are always cheerful and have ambitions of fame. Their constant cheer and talk of fame and stardom can be obnoxious. It’s a personality that’s easier to tolerate from a cute villager that doesn’t look like a possessed demon.
Rodney is an unassuming hamster with a smug personality. The smug personality is popular, making Rodney’s appearance on this list, let alone topping the list, unusual. Characters can get away with their smug personality and their insulting nature of it when they’re cute. Rodney is not cute. Rodney has the unfortunate luck to have a bland appearance, at best. A dull design combined with the casual insults and ego of the smug personality made Rodney one of the most hated villagers. He even has an entire subreddit dedicated to hating him. And it’s very active.
Hating a villager just makes you want to ignore their existence to oblivion, but if you keep on annoyingly having to run into them, it’s good to know that it’s up to you whether you’d like them to leave your village or not. Watch out for when a white cloud appears above a hated villager’s head. Talk to them when it does, and you’ll finally have the power to either make them leave or stay.
What villagers players hate is a matter of opinion, but a lot of players hate the same villagers. Others enjoy the meme or the joke behind them. Without a consistent and reliable way to remove villagers, players need a good sense of humor or a lot of luck when dealing with a disliked resident.
