Liam Hemsworth will step in as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher season 4, but it will be difficult for the actor to follow in Henry Cavill’s footsteps.
Henry Cavill gave his final bow as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher season 3, and Liam Hemsworth will make his debut as the iconic character in the fourth season. But replacing Cavill will be no easy task. The shocking news that Geralt would be recast in the Netflix fantasy drama television series came in October 2022 following reports that Cavill would reprise his role as Superman in James Gunn and Peter Safran's re-imagined DC Universe. Unfortunately, the Superman deal fell through, and DC decided to go in a different direction and cast a new actor to play Clark Kent (David Corenswet later got the gig).
Nevertheless, Hemsworth is the new Geralt in The Witcher, and Cavill is out. Many were upset by the news, seeing as Cavill played a significant role in making the show successful. But only time will tell how Hemsworth approaches the character and perhaps if he will bring something new to the Netflix show. Unfortunately, an interview with Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer of Vengerberg in The Witcher, casts more doubt on Hemsworth's ability to follow in Cavill's footsteps.
Henry Cavill spent three seasons developing his character and story in The Witcher, including Geralt's relationship with Yennefer. If Liam Hemsworth stepped into the role of Geralt in the first season, there wouldn't be any hesitations regarding his potential to embody the character. But he's not. Hemsworth's coming in during season 4 and will attempt to convince audiences that he was the one playing Geralt from the beginning. But, as Anya Chalotra's comments during an interview with Digital Spy suggest, it will be an uphill battle for the actor. While discussing her and Cavill's working relationship, Chalotra said:
"I mean, [Cavill]'s always so supportive, to begin with. Very open to receiving whatever, however you interpret a scene or a moment. There's a lot of trust that we've built together for the past five years, so there's no one I'd rather have done this season with, with all its twists and turns."
Cavill and Chalotra spent years building the relationship between Geralt and Yennefer, and Hemsworth will have to step in without having that experience. Hemsworth and Chalotra must have as much chemistry as she had with Cavill, or else Geralt and Yennefer's relationship won't be believable anymore. Of course, Chalotra expressed excitement about working with Hemsworth later in the interview. But fans will have to wait until The Witcher season 4 premieres to see if Hemsworth can pull off a miracle.
It's not Liam Hemsworth's fault that some are hesitant about how his version of Geralt will work in The Witcher. It would be difficult for any actor to play a character that had already been developed by another seasoned performer. However, Hemsworth has one thing going for him in season 4 — season 3 ended with Geralt leaving to search for Ciri. So he will be separated from Yennefer and Ciri for some time in the upcoming episodes. Hemsworth's Geralt will be surrounded by new characters, giving the actor some breathing space as he eases into his new role in The Witcher.
