BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WWMT) — Just under a year after the Kellogg Company announced its plans to split into three independent companies, the cereal giant formally announced Wednesday it will actually split into two companies.
The company announced it will split into the following: a global snacking business to be named Kellanova and a North American cereal business to be named WK Kellogg Co (executives decided on the split during a February financial meeting without a formal announcement).
WK Kellogg Co. is set to be the food company in the U.S., Canada, and Caribbean, carrying the brand-names that include Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Mini-Wheats, Special K, Raisin Bran, Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, Kashi, and Bear Naked, according to the news release.
Kellanova is expected to include brands like Pringles, Cheez-It, Pop-Tarts, Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats, MorningStar Farms, Incogmeato, Gardenburger, Nutri-Grain, RXBAR, and Eggo.
Unveiling the names for the global snacking and North American cereal businesses is an exciting milestone for both companies as we progress towards unleashing their full potential as standalone businesses," said Steve Cahillane, Kellogg Company's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and future Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Kellanova. He continued, "Upon spin completion, we believe both businesses will be better positioned to focus on their distinct strategic priorities, execute with increased agility and operational flexibility, realize improved outlooks for profitable growth, and shape distinctive corporate cultures, each rooted in Kellogg Company's strong values."
Originally in June 2022, the company announced plans to split into three, temporarily-named companies, which included: Global Snacking Co., North America Cereal Co., and Plant Co.
North America Cereal Co. and Plant Co. were originally planned to remain headquartered in Battle Creek, while Global Snacking Co. would have dual campuses in Battle Creek and Chicago; plus a corporate headquarters in the Windy City.
In addition, the cereal mogul planned on further separating by spinning off their U.S., Canadian, and Caribbean cereal- and plant-based businesses, which represented about 20% of the company’s net sales in 2021.
The Kellogg's brand is to remain on product packaging of both companies around the world.
